Binh's hypothetical scenarios on Pro-Life issues are good. I would like
to bring up one on this topic:
Assume China/Russia jumped into Iraq trying to influence the Middle
East. They helped the extremists to start a civil war and fight the US.
Fourteen years from now, both sides were still fighting evenly with US
losing 56k of troops. Our sons and daughters were about to be drafted
and sent to Iraq. What would you do?
For me, I would very likely become a stupid anti-war activist dedicating
all my time to stop that. I would try to get the US and China/Russia to
agree to pull out of Iraq and let the Iraqis to resolve their internal
matters. How different would that scenario from the Vietnam case?
http://vietnam.vassar.edu/doc16.html
" The reunification of Viet-Nam shall be carried out step by step
through peaceful means on the basis of discussions and agreements
between North and South Viet-Nam, without coercion or annexation by
either party, and without foreign interference. The time for
reunification will be agreed upon by North and South Viet-Nam."
" The United States anticipates that this Agreement will usher in an era
of reconciliation with the Democratic Republic of Viet-Nam as with all
the peoples of Indochina. In pursuance of its traditional policy, the
United States will contribute to healing the wounds of war and to
postwar reconstruction of the Democratic Republic of Viet-Nam and
throughout Indochina."
" North and South Viet-Nam shall respect the Demilitarized Zone on
either side of the Provisional Military Demarcation Line."
I do not know what would have happened if the US had not pulled out
troops. Would a lot more US troops and Vietnamese have died? Would the
Soviet hardliners have let Gorbachev talk to Reagan while their nation
still being at war? Would Communism have fallen apart?
I know these are results (either directly or indirectly) from their
pullout, for which I feel really blessed:
I had a chance to meet wonderful people like you.
I had a chance to be in the US, meet my wife, and have my family.
Although VN is still not a free country, we had close relatives and
family friends being killed in '75, my Dad spent time in the
re-education camp, I spent over 2 years of my precious youth time in
various prisons/labor camp getting beat/abused, I am not blaming anyone
including the Americans. They tried and fought very hard alongside with
the South Vietnamese Army, althought we failed. I believe VN is moving
to the right direction now and can be a free and properous country in
the future.

Because North VN communists violated Geneva Agreement. They attacked the
South in Tet 1968. They also built underground "du kick" in the South.
Didn't you remember their propaganda? "Khang chien truong ky nhat dinh
thang
loi" "Da danh la danh den cung"
North Korean Communists didn't invade the South after the division.
Neither
did Eastern German.
If only the anti-war activists can stop the war, then the Iraq war could
have been stopped already. Didn't you know about all the war protests in
this country and around the world?

There are NO two countries exactly the same. So pick any 2 countries to
compare is doing apple&orange comparison. One can only analyze on the
common/difference between the countries. Nobody can guarantee that if
one
thing happens in country A, it will happen the same way in country B no
matters how much in common those countries are. Again, if you disagree
with
my assumption so much, what makes your assumption about VN war
convincible ?
They're all just assumptions after all.

Remember Iraq didn't send terrorists to place bombs in U.S or elsewhere.
Bin
Laden followers/sympathizers did. Now that he escaped U.S attack, he
gained
even higher respect among terrorists. He doesn't even have to physically
lead or order the terrorist groups around the world. Those just attack
on
his behalf.
